Tips on Dressing Up for a Work Party

The annual Christmas work party is a ritual that few men escape, and many men revel in. An opportunity to have a few drinks and loosen up with co-workers – although it may be important to quickly mention a stressing of the word “few” – and a great chance to dress up a little bit and show a flair that may not be possible in an office setting.

For those who also have to attend such events as trade shows, corporate or business trips or meetings, and other more formal events, there is also a set of expectations to meet and surpass.
How to Dress for a Christmas or Holiday Party

This discrimination truly relies on two primary factors – the venue chosen for hosting your corporate party, and the nature of your workplace and employment.

If the Christmas or holiday party is taking place at a general restaurant or a pub, it is recommended that one wears at least a pair of dress jeans or casual slacks, and a collared shirt – tucked in or untucked. Blue jeans or work jeans are simply out of the question, as are t-shirts (which should not be worn to any iteration of a work party).

An excellent outfit for a more casual, laid-back night might be a chocolate or black leather bomber jacket, a striped or patterned collared shirt (feel free to experiment a little with colour, although neons may be a bit forward!) and lightly pinstriped cotton or wool pants.

More formal occasions call for a blazer or, in the case of a fine-dining restaurant, a full suit. Always judge the likely wardrobe of the average party-goer and attempt to dress one step ahead of that model. In cases where most men are likely to wear a collared shirt and dress pants, add a blazer. This is a general rule of thumb that will come in handy frequently.

Oh, and one more tip – leave your sneakers at home, gentlemen. Dress shoes or loafers should really be worn in any event.
How to Dress for a Trade Show or Business Trip

Dressing for a trade show can vary greatly depending on what field of employment a man might be undertaking.

Tradesmen attending a trade show focused on tools, building materials, and other construction related industries would do well to wear a low-key outfit such as a casual sport-shirt and a pair of nice looking jeans – remembering once again that simple work jeans are not appropriate, even in this venue. Work pants in a solid colour such as black or navy will also do.

Professionals attending a trade show such as engineers would do well to wear a business suit in conservative colours such as navy or black, and compliment this outfit with traditional dress shirts and ties. French blue, ivory, and red are excellent choices for working professionals looking for a snappy, business-like wardrobe.

Whatever the event or occasion, it is important for a gentleman to show that he takes interest in his appearance. Social events such as parties, business trips, or trade shows are instances where many people will meet with first, and lasting, impressions.
