– Where It All Started
One in the many well known companies in the maker of bags is Coach. Coach or Coach Inc. is an American based company which started out in 1941 in Manhattan, New York. Its first name was Manhattan Leather Bags; it started out as a family business. In 1946 Miles Cahn and his wife joined the company, beforehand both were in the leather business where their primary goods sold were wallets and handbags.
In the year 1950 Cahn was already running the business all by himself. Most of what they were selling were still wallets, after which, Cahn also discovered a way to make leathers soft, flexible, stronger and more long lasting. Handbags were also made during this time with different styles. Coach Handbags were made of cow hide, which made Coach Bags better than the thin leather other bags were made of in the market at that time
During the 1960’s Coach bags were already famous for their durability. Bonnie Cashin was also working for Coach during those times. She was then a famous fashion designer. During the stay of Cashin in Coach, she innovated and changed a lot of things. Some are which the revolution of brighter colored bags, in contrast with the usual brown colored handbags at that time. She also included side pockets and coin purses in the Coach Bags. Cashin also started making matching shoes for Coach Bags and because of the popularity of Coach, at 1963 they ran their first ad in New York.
After this, Coach became popular and the demands for Coach Bags were already very high in the market. They had stores inside and outside of malls and also started their mail order business.
In 1986, Coach was sold for 30 million dollars to Sara Lee Corporation. By November of the same year, Coach was greatly successful and had a total of 12 independent stores and about 50 boutiques inside malls.
Lew Frankfort took the presidency of Coach and is said responsible in making the company a world-wide brand. He also made Coach Bags affordable.
Coach is now one of the biggest brands when it comes to bags and has factories manufacturing their products in China, Hongkong, Italy, South Korea and United States.
